We are both having a large amount of medication each month and at the current prices cut not survive to eat if we had to pay the amounts being charged. I have epilepsy and arthritis and my wife type 2 diabetes and high blood pressure and cholesterol. Today 1 May 2009 I have received a letter saying I was not exempt and am being charged £42.60 for a prescription I had on 20/11/08. This fee includes a £35.50 penalty charge – how can they do this, what should I do please.

I must say I was amazed to discover that Cancer patients were charged at all. As with most conditions (mine is RA) you don’t have to be over 60 to contract these ailments.

Further to the above the Guardian today says that the cost of prescription charges for cancere patients who have to pay is only £20 million a year – a cheap piece of “generosity”. This figure probably reflects the fact that the majority of such patients are over 60, so they automatically get drugs free.

However, the major part of the cost related to people with chronic illness. The cost of abolishing prescriptions for these people is apparently £300-350 million, and Brown’s pledge is dependent on how much money is saved in the NHS drugs budget. Still peanuts, mind you.

As both a Swindon councillor and a shop steward with Unite I fully support the campaign for free prescriptions. With the Government struggling the PM must surely see the importance of this campaign for the people of this country. Both the Scottish and Welsh Parliaments are adopting this popular policy – why should the English miss out?

Please add my name, it is unfair that I have to pay for my Blood Pressure medicine, when there is no hope that I will no longer need it!

I don’t mind paying for ad-hoc medicines, but a quarterly charge of £7.10 is unacceptable for life-long medication!.
